The passenger presses the window button and nothing happens. You try the driver’s control, and the same glass moves. Or the opposite happens: the passenger can use the window, but your master switch cannot control it.
That difference is valuable information for a repair shop. It does not automatically prove which switch is bad, but it helps narrow the investigation. Power Window Repair Las Vegas can assess the controls and related window system before recommending the work.
First, check which controls your vehicle allows
Look in your owner’s manual for the window-lock function. Depending on the vehicle, it can restrict certain passenger controls while leaving the driver’s controls available. A rear-door child lock and a window lock are not necessarily the same control.
Also check the operating conditions described in the manual. Some vehicles allow window movement for a limited period after switching off; opening a door may end that period. Compare the controls under the same normal operating conditions while safely parked.
Keep the opening clear whenever the window moves. NHTSA’s power-window safety guidance reminds drivers to watch for children’s hands, feet, and heads before raising glass. Never use a person’s hand to test a reversing feature.
Record the difference, rather than guessing the part
Make a simple note for the shop:
- Which door is affected?
- Does the passenger button move the glass up, down, both ways, or neither?
- Does the driver’s button produce a different result?
- Did the problem begin suddenly or gradually?
- Are the door lock, mirror, or other controls also behaving differently?
One useful description is: “The right-front window moves both ways from the passenger button, but the driver’s button does nothing.” That tells the technician more than “the window motor is broken.”
If the window is also slow or noisy, mention that separately. Our article on signs of a failing power-window motor discusses symptoms that may accompany a different underlying problem.
Why replacing the unresponsive button may not solve it
Window-control arrangements vary. Depending on the design, the problem can involve switch contacts, connections, wiring, or a control module. The technician needs the correct circuit information and tests for your vehicle.
A window that moves from one control shows that movement is possible at that moment. It does not establish that every electrical connection or mechanical component is healthy. Intermittent faults are especially difficult to judge from a single attempt.
Avoid ordering parts solely because an online video shows a similar symptom. Do not bridge wiring or bypass a safety feature to make the window work.
What if it stops working from both switches?
Let the shop know that the behavior changed. If the glass is stuck open, describe its position and whether it appears loose or tilted. Stop operating it if you hear grinding or see abnormal movement.

Ask for a repair estimate tied to the diagnosis
Affordable pricing should come with a clear explanation of the failure. Ask whether the estimate includes diagnosis, the specified replacement part or wiring work, labor, and any setup required afterward. If further damage is found, request an updated total before additional work begins.
Before leaving, have the technician demonstrate the repaired window from both intended controls, including any normal lockout function. This is a practical way to confirm that the original complaint has been addressed.
If getting to a shop is difficult, read about mobile power-window service and ask whether your vehicle, repair, and address qualify.
